Small Victorian Staffordshire Transferware Plate Italian Landscape, c 1868

A delicate blue transfer of a misty Italian landscape decorates this antique English transferware plate.

A ceramic molded plate has had a fired on pale blue transfer. The design is of an idyllic landscape with people taking in the river scene. There are fanciful pavilions and Italianate urns and architecture, and a border of oak branches at the mouth. The foot is very shallow and glazed. The glaze has fine crazing in spots.

The registered diamond mark on the base is a diamond shape with letters and a Roman numeral of IV. On the right corner is an “x”, the left corner appears to be an N, the top corner is an A, and the bottom corner is the number “2” The word REGISTERED appears below the diamond mark. This mark identifies the plate as being made from ceramic in 1868. Not all identifiers are in the correct location, but the mark most likely identifies the plate as being made on December 2, 1868.

6 7/8” (17.5 cm) diameter x 7/8” (2.2 cm) tall. Weighs 8.5 oz (240 g)

CONDITION

An old hairline extends from the mouth to nearly the center of the plate. There is staining in the crazing on the plate surface. There are customary kiln flaws, such as bumps, reserves, and blue spots. There are no other breaks, chips, or repairs.
