A great pair of Egyptian Revival bookends from the time of the King Tut discovery in the 20’s.
The heavy pair of cast iron bookends are in the shape of the enigmatic Egyptian sphinx. The design is of a human headed lion surrounded by lotus flowers and a temple top panel with a winged disc. There are no felts on the bases. They have a dark bronze looking patina.
The bookends are unmarked.
MEASUREMENTS
4 ¼” (10.8 cm) wide x 1 ¾” (4.4 cm) deep x 3 5/8” (9.2 cm) tall. Weighs 2 lbs 4.7 oz (1290 g)
CONDITION
There are no breaks, cracks, dents or deep scratches. There is rust on the backs and edges, particularly on the back side of an upper corner on one bookend. They have a nice aged patina.
