Mid Century Impressionist Soapstone Sculpture of Mother and Child

The carving is very exact and artful with such a soft patina. The soapstone is fairly old with no soapy feel.

Curvilinear carved soapstone with a design of mother and child done in a modern impressionistic style reminiscent of African art. The figure has a flat base and stands upright. The stone color is a nice warm olive-brown. It has a wonderful tactile feel.

MEASUREMENTS
5” (12.7 cm) tall x 2 5/8” (6.7 cm) wide x ¾” (1.9 cm) thick. Weighs 7.9 oz (225 g)

CONDITION
There are no chips, cracks, or breaks. There are small wear scratches; the back shows more wear from resting flat on a surface.

A great piece of mid-century art. It may have been a study for a larger piece. Even with its small size, it still has a strong presence.
