A large hand-thrown and hand-painted porcelain lidded serving dish from the Chinese Republic Period with polychrome paintings of peonies and mynah birds.

The paintings have good color, shading, and line quality. The birds closely resemble the real-life bird. The dish has script in black enamel on the lid and on the back side of the body. There is gilding on the lid finial, pot mouth rim and pot side handles.

The rounded glazed foot is shallow and indented. The base is unglazed, and you can see the potter's wheel marks with iron red from firing. The base glaze is thick and slightly off-white.

MEASUREMENTS

10” (24.5 cm) diameter x 5” (12.7 cm) tall. Weighs 5 lbs 3.6 oz (2375 g)

CONDITION

There are no cracks, hairlines, chips, breaks or repairs. There is wear on the gilding and a branch that the bird is sitting on. Otherwise, the enamels are bright and fresh looking. There are kiln flaws, such as pinholes, reserve lines, black spots, and bumps.

A work of art that was produced for everyday use. I just love the mynah bird paintings.
