A porcelain hibachi “fire bowl” brazier with blue cobalt stenciled designs of kirins and flowers. It is a large piece with a visual simplicity.
The heavy porcelain cylinder is glazed with a thick white glaze and decorated in under glaze cobalt. The mouth and base foot have painted bands in cobalt. The hibachi has an unglazed base and a rounded shallow foot that is partially glazed. The interior is only glazed near the top of the cylinder.
Provenance: The hibachi was purchased from the renowned Honeychurch Antiques in Seattle many years ago.
MEASUREMENTS
7” (17.8 cm) diameter x 7 ½” (19.0 cm) tall. Weighs 4 lbs 1.5 oz (1855 g)
CONDITION
There are no breaks, chips, cracks, or repairs. The interior is stained from use. There are manufacture faults like blue smudges, black spots, reserve pin holes, stencil inaccuracies, and a hairline in the glaze. The exterior shows wear from use.
A Japanese hibachi that could be used in many different ways. You could use it for its intended purpose to grill food, or as a cachepot for plants. It’s also a very striking object to simply use for decoration.
