A cast Japanese bronze lamp from the 1920’s with an archaistic Chinese shape and design.

The heavy bronze has been inset with champlevé in a design of a Chinese Taotie mask. It has an archaic Chinese Hu shape with peg like handles on the side, and is well cast with many deep details and a deep antique bronze patina. It was lamped in the twenties and has an old cord.

A molded mark on the base reads MADE IN JAPAN.

As an aside, I a couple of years ago I saw a print from the 1920’s that showed a lamp just like this one, with women in period (flapper) clothing. I mention it just as an interesting factoid/coincidence.

MEASUREMENTS

21.0” (53.3 cm) tall x 9 ½” (24.1 cm) wide x 7 ¼” (18.4 cm) deep. Weighs 6 lbs 10.9 oz (3035g)

CONDITION

There are no cracks, or dents. There are no enamel losses, although they do have some pitting. There is a crack in the thin fitting at the base of the stem. There is a small amount of verdigris on one handle and the body nearby. There is also wear to the patina along the edges of the top, the bottom of the foot and the fitting on at the base of the stem. The stem and bulb sockets have some scratches.

A great lamp to add richness and elegance to the home. It’s a hands-on work of art from Japan.
