Framed Chinese Embroidery Foo Lions Late Qing/Republic

An old silk embroidery that has much glitter and the color red. Foo lions represent protection.

 

Red Silk has been embroidered with couched gold threads in a design of Foo lions. The silk was part of a panel but was cut down and framed. The large lion is the male because he has his paw on the world. There are two baby lions below him. The silk has been professionally framed with a modern gold colored wooden frame and covered with glass.

 

The picture has a framer's paper tag on the back that reads, "Uptown Paint and Art Supply Inc.  Artist Supply & Picture Framing 5034 CENTRAL PHOENIX, ARIZ. 85012” and with the telephone numbers 266-9301 and 266-2255

 

 

Frame – 21 ¼” (54.0 cm) tall x 19 ½” (49.5 cm) wide x 1 ¼” (3.2 cm) thick.

The gold threads are neither frayed or loose, and show no sign of fading. The red silk has some small slits starting but is dark and doesn’t appear to have faded. The back paper lining has a couple of very small punctures where metal nails or brads are poking through the paper. There is also one small tear in the paper near the top.  The frame is in very good condition with just light wear to the gold lacquer and a bit of gilt loss on the two lower corners.

 

A colorful and glittering Chinese silk that will stand out with its deep red color and gold threads.
