A heavy Chinese Republic Era blue and white crackle glazed bowl with Chilung dragons chasing the pearl of wisdom.
The hand potted bowl has been glazed with a medium grayish-white crackle glaze. Some of the crackle in the glaze is blue and some is more of a brown color. The lip of the bowl is slightly everted.
The exterior of the bowl has been hand painted with two Chilung dragons in the clouds pursuing the pearl of wisdom. The interior has a cross hatch band along the mouth and an abstract rendering of what appears to be a phoenix in the well. All the designs are painted with a deep cobalt.
The shallow rounded foot shows the red iron of the clay. There is some glaze on the foot. The bowl is unmarked.
MEASUREMENTS
6 ¼” (15.9 cm) diameter x 2 ¾” (7.0 cm) tall. Weighs 1 lb 3.5 oz (555 g)
CONDITION
There are no cracks, chips, breaks, or repairs. In general the glaze is very shiny; however there is some wear in the well, as well as light wear scratches throughout. There are also a number of kiln flaws such as bumps and a raised area on the outside where the clay was not smoothed completely before firing.
A nice large bowl that is visually artistic. It reminds me of designs from the late Ming.
