Aesthetic Movement Victorian Silver Plate Bedside Tea Service 19th Century

An elaborate small Victorian silver plate tea service, produced by Holmes and Edward, that would have been placed by your bed for that early morning jolt of tea. It has that influence from China and Japan in the designs.

 

A heavy base metal has been silver plated. There are five pieces: tray, teapot, creamer and sugar with lid.  The repousse designs are of a sailing ship, lotus flowers, iris, and scrolling floral bands. The tray handles are bars set in a scroll. The sides of tea servers have a beaten design with scrolling floral bands. The service pieces rest on raised elaborate feet. The lid of the teapot is attached, but that of the sugar removes completely. The handle of the service pieces are C-shaped with floral accents. The tray has a flat base.

 

The bases of all pieces except the lid are marked HOLMES & EDWARDS QUADRUPLE PLATE BRIDGEPORT CONN. The marks on the creamer and sugar are on an attached round medallion. The mark on the tray is stamped as words under the rim near one of the handles. The mark on the teapot is also stamped as just words on the base. They all have the production number of 1404. They also have the numbers 3096 and 1054 etched.

Teapot – 5 7/8” (14.9 cm) long x 2 7/8” (7.3 cm) wide x 4 ¼” (10.8 cm) tall

Creamer – 5 ¼” (13.3 cm) long x 2 5/8” (6.7 cm) wide x 3” (7.6 cm) tall

Sugar – 5 5/8” (14.3 cm) long x 2 7/8” (7.3 cm) wide x 3 7/8” (9.8 cm) tall

Total weight 4 lbs 1 oz (1800 g)

 

 

The tray has a few very shallow dents. The other pieces have no breaks, cracks, dents, or repairs. All pieces have silver loss and wear, but still shine up. The bottom of the tray shows light to moderate corrosion. The service pieces rest flat on a surface.
